When the humid shadows hover
Over all the starry spheres
And the melancholy darkness
Gently weeps in rainy tears,
What a bliss to press the pillow
Of a cottage-chamber bed
And lie listening to the patter
Of the soft rain overhead!
हिन्दी अनुवाद – जब नम काले बादल जो पानी से भरे हैं, तारों भरे आसमान में मंडराते हैं। ऐसा लगता है जितनी उदासी, अंधेरा या मन है। धीरे-धीरे बारिश आंसुओं के रूप में गिर रही है। कितना परम सुख है जब हम अपने घर में तकिये पर सिर रखकर बारिश की पट पट की आवाज़ अपने सिर के ऊपर यानि कि छत पर सुनते हैं।

हिन्दी अनुवाद – जैसे-जैसे धीमी-धीमी आवाज़ छत की परत पर पड़ती है, दिल में एक गूंज सी उठती है और कवि के मन में हजारों काल्पनिक विचार उमड़ते रहते हैं। लगता है हजारों पुरानी यादों के ताने बाने से कवि के मन में एक खूबसूरत तस्वीर बनने लगती है जैसे ही वह छत पर बारिश की आवाज की पट-पट सुनता है।

To regard the darling dreamers

हिन्दी अनुवाद – अब कवि की यादों में उसकी माँ आ जाती है। बारिश अतीत की यादें लाती है, यह माँ की स्मृति है वह सब भाई बहनों को बहुत प्यार करती थीं, वह उन्हें सुबह तक सोने देती थीं। और बहुत प्यार से हम सबको देखती थीं।
कवि महसूस करता है जब बारिश आती है, माँ उसे देख रही है, बारिश की आवाज से जो छत की परत पर पट-पट गिरती है, वह अपने अतीत को वर्तमान से जोड़ता है।

Central Idea of the Poem
The theme of the poem is the healing power of rain, the musical sound of raindrops falling on the rooftop at night has the ability to revive sweet memories. The rain thus soothes and comforts an overworked mind by taking it back to its lovely past.

Ans. (i) ‘Humid shadows’ refers to the dark clouds that produce rain.
‘Humid shadows’ का मतलब है काले बादल जो बरसते है।
(ii) “starry spheres’ refers to the night sky abounding in stars.
“starry spheres’ का मतलब है तारों से भरा आसमान।
(iii) This refers to the happiness of the poet.
यह कवि की प्रसन्नता दिखाता है।
(iv) This refers to the various imaginary thoughts that are aroused in the poets mind.
इसका मतलब कवि के मन में उठने वाले हजारों काल्पनिक विचार हैं।

Ans. When it rains, the poet feels delighted to lie with his head pressed against the pillow of his cottage chamber bed and listen to the patter of the soft rain.
जब वर्षा होती है, कवि बहुत खुश होता है वह अपने घर में तकिये पर सिर रखकर लेटा रहता है और धीमी बारिश की पट पट आवाज सुनता है।
(3) What is the single major memory that comes to the poet ? Who are the “darling dreamers” he refers to ?
कवि के मन में एकलौती सबसे बड़ी यादगार क्या बात है? डार्लिंग ट्रीमर्स से कवि का क्या आशय है ?
Ans. The single major memory that comes to the poet is that of his mother and her fond look.
The ‘darling dreamers’ are the poets siblings in his childhood, when they were lovingly put to sleep by their mother.
कवि के मन में जो इकलौती सबसे बड़ी यादगार बात है वह है उनकी माँ और उनकी मनमोहिनी सूरत।
यहाँ ‘डार्लिंग ड्रीमर्स’ से कवि का क्या मतलब है बचपन में उनके सब भाई बहन जिन्हें माँ प्यार से सुला देती थी।
(4) Is the poet now a child ? Is his mother still alive?
क्या कवि एक बालक है ? क्या उसकी माँ जीवित है ?
Ans. No, the poet is not a child now. He is a grown up man. Can’t say whether his mother is alive or not, he remembers her when he is inside his cozy cottage and enjoy the patter of rain on the roof.
नहीं। कवि अब बच्चा नहीं है। वह परिपक्व आदमी है। ये नहीं कह सकते कि उनकी माँ जीवित है कि नहीं, वह अपनी माँ को याद करते हैं जब वह अपने आरामदायक घर के अन्दर हैं और छत पर बारिश की टप टप की आवाजें सुन रहे हैं।

(1) When you were a young child, did your mother tuck you in, as the poet’s did ?
जब तुम छोटे थे, क्या तुम्हारी माँ ने तुम्हें अपने में समेटा था जैसे कवि की माँ ने किया ?
Ans. Yes, my mother used to tuck me in when I was a young child just like the poet’s mother did (self experience question).
हाँ मेरी माँ ने मुझे अपने में समेटा है जब मैं छोटा था वैसे ही जैसे कवि की माँ ने किया (अपने अनुभव से छात्र स्वयं लिखें।)
(2) Do you like rain ? What do you do when it rains steadily or heavily as described in the poem ?
क्या आपको बारिश अच्छी लगती है। आप क्या करते हैं जब बारिश धीरे या तेज़ी से आती है जैसे कि कविता में दर्शाया है?
Ans. Yes, I like the rain. When it rains, I get into my house and enjoy the weather with my family. We enjoy tea, sometimes we play outside in rain. (self experience question).
हाँ, मुझे बारिश अच्छी लगती है। जब बारिश होती है मैं घर में घुस जाता हूँ और अपने परिवार के साथ मौसम का मज़ा लेता हूँ। हम चाय पीते हैं। कभी-कभी हम बाहर बारिश में खेलते हैं। (छात्र स्वयं अपने अनुभव से लिखें।)
(3) Does everybody have a cosy bed to lie in when it rains ?
Look around you and describe how different kinds of people, or animals spend time, seek shelter etc., during rain.

Ans. No, everybody is not fortunate to have a cosy bed to lie in when it rains. Not everyone sets to enjoy the comfort of cosy homes during rains. I’ve seen many people and animals seeking shelter under trees and under the roofs of small tea stalls. The shopkeepers of such stalls are delighted as the people waiting for the rain to subside often end up buying tea and snacks.
नहीं, हर कोई इतना भाग्यशाली नहीं होता कि बारिश होने पर उसे आरामदेह बिस्तर पर लेटने को मिले। हर किसी को बारिश में आरामदेह बिस्तर के मज़े नहीं मिलते। मैंने काफी लोगों
और जानवरों को पेड़ के नीचे और चाय की दुकान की छत के नीचे आश्रय लेते देखा है। ऐसी दुकानों के दुकानदार खुश हो जाते हैं, क्योंकि लोग बारिश के बंद होने के इन्तज़ार में अक्सर चाय और कुछ नाश्ता खरीद ही लेते हैं।
(1) How does the poet describe the sky before the rain falls?
कवि बारिश के आने से पहले के आसमान का कैसे वर्णन करता है?
Ans. There were dark clouds in the sky, they hide the stars with darkness all around. The poet compares the darkness with sadness as these humid shadows gently weep which pours down rainy tears.
करता है क्योंकि यही नम बादल धीमे-धीमे रोते हैं जो बारिश के रूप में नीचे गिरते हैं।
(2) Who all does the poet remember while listening to the rain ?
बारिश की आवाज सुनकर कवि किसको याद करता है ?
Ans. The poet remembers his mother who used to put him to bed lovingly every night. He remembers his sister who died early.
कवि अपनी माँ को याद करता है जो प्यार से हर रात उसे बिस्तर में सुलाती थी। वह अपनी बहन को भी याद करता है | जिसकी अल्पायु में मृत्यु हो गयी थी।
