Difficult Word-Meanings

Central Idea of the Poem
Main idea of the poem is, the speaker is confronted with two roads and he has to make a choice as to which road he should take.
The theme of the poem is that human beings are defined by “choices they face” and the “choices they make”.
Thinking about the Poem
I. (1) Where does the traveller find himself ? What problem does he face ?
यात्री अपने को कहाँ पाता है ? वह किस समस्या का सामना करता है ?
Ans. The traveller finds himself standing on a fork in the path. He is in a problem as he must choose one path and he is unable to decide which one to choose.
यात्री अपने को दोराहे पर खड़ा हुआ पाता है। उसके सामने यह समस्या है कि उसे एक रास्ता चुनना है और वह निर्णय नहीं कर पाता कि किस रास्ते को चुने।
(2) Discuss what these phrases mean to you.
इन वाक्यांशों का मतलब क्या है, उसकी चर्चा करें।
(i) a yellow wood. एक पीला जंगल।
Ans. It refers to forest which has withering leaves as in the season of autumn.
यह उस जंगल को दर्शाता है जिसमें सूखी पत्तियाँ हैं, जैसे कि पतझड़ के मौसम में होती हैं।
(ii) it was a grassy and wanted wear.
उस पर काफी घास थी और वह ज्यादा इस्तेमाल नहीं हुआ था।
Ans. It means that the path had a lot of grass on it. This means that it had not been walked over by many people
इसका मतलब है कि रास्ते में काफी घास है और इस पर लोगों की आवाजाही ही नहीं रही।
(iii) the passing there. वहाँ से गुजरते हुए।
Ans.. It means that when he walked on the path that he had chosen.
इसका मतलब है कि जब वो चल रहा था उस रास्ते पर जो उसने चना।
(iv) leaves no step had trodden black.
किसी के गुजरने से पत्तियाँ कुचल कर काली नहीं हुईं।
Ans. It means that no one had walked over the leaves as they were still green. If they had been walked over, they would have turned black.
इसका मतलब है कोई पत्तों के ऊपर से गुजरा नहीं है क्योंकि वे अभी तक हरी हैं। अगर उन पर कोई चला होता तो वे अब तक काली पड़ गई होती।
(v) how way leads on to way ?
कैसे रास्ते दर रास्ते जाते हुए ?
Ans. It means that as we walk on a path, we come across more options and make choices further. We keep on walking ahead on that way.
इसका क्या मतलब है जब हम किसी रास्ते पर चलने लगते हैं, हमारे सामने और विकल्प आते हैं और हम आगे अपनी पसन्द देखते जाते हैं। हम उसी रास्ते पर आगे बढ़ते जाते हैं।
(3) Is there any difference between the two roads as the poet describes them
(i) in stanzas two and three ?
(ii) in the last two lines of the poem ?
क्या दोनों रास्तों में कुछ अन्तर है जैसा कवि ने वर्णन किया है
(i) दूसरे और तीसरे पैरा में ?
(ii) कविता की आखिरी दो पंक्तियों में ?
Ans. (i) The two paths were similar. In the beginning, the poet felt that one of them was grassy and had not been walked over by many people, but when he walked on it for some distance, he realized that it was like the other road.
दोनों रास्ते एक से थे। शुरुआत में कवि को लगा कि इनमें से एक रास्ते पर काफी घास उगी हुई है और उस पर लोगों की आवाजाही कम रही होगी, पर जब वह उस रास्ते पर कुछ दूरी तक चला, उसे महसूस हुआ कि ये रास्ता भी दूसरे रास्ते जैसा ही है।
(ii) Here again, the poet talks of his initial decisions when he thought that the roads were different and chose the one that had been walked over by a lesser number of people.
यहाँ फिर से कवि अपने शुरुआती निर्णय के बारे में बात करता है जब उसे लगा था कि रास्ते अलग हैं और फिर वह उस रास्ते को चुनता है जिस पर कम लोग चले।
(4) What do you think the last two lines of the poem mean ? (Looking back, does the poet regret his choice or accept it ?)
आप कविता की आखिरी दो पंक्तियों के बारे में क्या सोचते हैं ? पीछे देखते हुए क्या कवि को अपनी पसन्द पर पछतावा है या स्वीकति है?
Ans. The last two lines of the poem mean the acceptance of reality. The poet made a choice and accepted the challenging path. He wanted to do something different in his life so he chooses the less travelled road.
No he does not regret his choice.
अन्तिम दो पंक्तियों का मतलब है यथार्थ को स्वीकार करना। कवि रास्ता पसन्द करता है और चुनौतीपूर्ण रास्ते को स्वीकारता है। वह जिन्दगी में कुछ अलग करना चाहता था इसलिए उसने वह राह चुनी जिस पर कम लोग चले।
नहीं, वह अपने निर्णय पर पछतावा नहीं करता।

(1) What is a wood ? What did the narrator see in the wood ?
‘Wood’ से क्या अभिप्राय है ? लेखक ने ‘Wood’ में क्या देखा?
Ans. Wood means a forest. The narrator saw two paths diverging and disappearing in the undergrowth.
‘वुड’ का अभिप्राय जंगल से है। लेखक ने रास्ते को दो भागों में बँटते देखा जो आगे घने जंगल में कहीं खो से गये थे।
(2) What is the theme of the poem “The Road Not Taken’?
‘अलग रास्ता’ कविता का क्या विषय है ?
Ans. The theme of this poem is that human beings are defined by “Choices they face” and the “Choices they make”.
इस कविता का विषय है-मनुष्यों द्वारा जिन्दगी में फैसलों का सामना करना और इन्हीं फैसलों से उनका जीवन निर्धारित होना।
